Health & Safety is a waste of money! Am I right?
WRONG! Prevention is better than a cure and truer words have not been said. With every incident or accident there are direct and indirect costs that spins off of that misfortune. Direct costs would include worker’s compensation, medical costs, legal fees, insurance etc. While indirect costs include loss of production time, time to train a replacement or interim worker, time for cleanup/restart, low morale from workforce etc. As simple as the words might seem, the actual costs are great and not just in dollars but also the mental and emotional sacrifice that comes with dealing with the situation. Health and safety emphasises the need for preventative measures and routine checks to ensure that the misfortune does not occur in your work space. Layering of safeguards and utilising safety tools and processes are literally life savers and should not be ignored. If your work space has a present safety culture and it seems like nothing happens and you’re wondering why should we continue, then guess what? It’s working and it’s effective. The company is actually saving the money that might have to be spent if something unfortunate does happen. Continue to be Safe and Healthy.
